How is it that the Shelters entrusted to care for the unwanted, the abandoned, the surrendered, sick and injured animals in Ontario are not being given the chance at caring, loving forever homes which they so deserve? So much easier obviously to not take the needed time necessary to ensure that these victims of indifference and complacency are placed with families that will ensure a quality of life that is desperately needed and which they have a birth right to.
Action must be taken, not only by residents in Ontario, but across Canada, across the Global Front to apply the needed pressure necessary to ensure that all shelters everywhere adopt a NO KILL POLICY.

STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF OVER 350 ANIMALS AT THE NEWMARKET OSPCA!!!!!!!
ORA Project Accountability NOW: Abolish Death Row at Hamilton Animal Control!

It is the responsibility of every individual and all nations to give love, respect and kindness to all creation. We will not have justice and peace in this world until we remember we are commanded in the words of Jesus: To be compassionate as our Father is compassionate.
The way we win justice for the animals is to follow the example of Christ and be persistent in prayer….prayer is the weapon that defeats every evil — it is the way to victory and justice for all creation.
[...] ONTARIO SHELTER ANIMALS ARE IN TROUBLE [...]
In some ways I think the ringworm debacle was a good thing. (Of course not from the point of view of the animals.)
Maybe, just MAYBE, more people will start to realize that “shelters” are misnamed, a pretty euphemism.
Prison/DeathRow has been the reality for a very long time. Take off the rose-coloured glasses, Ontario. Our laws are still completely useless. How telling, that the OSPCA has DECREASED it’s capacity to “shelter” animals, after all of those lengthy renovations.
The secrecy around the report is no surprise to me. The OSPCA is a law unto itself, and answers to no-one.
Without the OSPCA, communities would have to rely on municipal or privately run animal control agencies to take care of their strays and unwanted pets. Many of these places, especially those in rural Ontario, still use a bullet to the head as a means of legal euthanasia. Most do not even attempt to adopt out their animals after the 72 hour holding period is up. I wish that all of the OSPCA bashers would figure this out. No, they are not perfect, but it’s better than what could be. Any why does everyone seem to forget that it is not the OSPCA that produces all of these unwanted animals? It is the irresponsible and/or uneducated public that is to be blamed for the numbers of animals that are euthanized! There are simply not enough homes for the amount of pets born every year…no kill shelters eventually become full (generally over-filled, disease filled, warehouses IMO)…where do the animals go then?
It is unfortunate that so many animals lost their lives to something so easily treated as ringworm…however, it’s no worse then the thousands that die in Ontario shelters and pounds simply because nobody wants them and there is no space and/or money to keep them.
Perhaps you could read the report, Jill. There was no ringworm. They wanted to do a cull. They need to start telling truths, not lies.
I was a 30 year supporter of the OSPCA, as I thought their mandate was to prevent cruelty to animals. They seem to perpetrate cruelty, not prevent it.
I agree that there are too many animals, and not enough homes. Why then, doesn’t the OSPCA support a ban on sales of puppies and kittens in pet stores? Why do they freely admit that puppy mills are legal, and yet they do nothing to change that? I asked them how I could help THEM with stronger legislation. They had no answers for that question. I am welcome to lobby my government for stronger penalties for animal cruelty. The OSPCA’s mandate states “The Society must advocate for improved animal welfare and protection”. They do no such advocating. Far from it. Ask them what they are doing, and the answer is “silence”. I will not donate to an organization that does NOTHING to improve animal welfare laws.
Those of us who HAVE called the OSPCA for cruelty complaints learn all too well what their mandate is. Warehouse them, and then euthanize them.
I have never been frightened of a government agency, which despite what the report says, the OSPCA investigations department IS. Their press release regarding Chief, on Nov, 3, 2010, was the most frightening thing I have ever read.
Did you know the Horse in the Garage case proves that ANY animal may be caged, for his entire life? That a Veterinarian, sorry, TWO veterinarians hired by the OSPCA, stated that the horse’s care was suitable and adequate for most of his 8 months of incarceration?
I didn’t realize that this organization built their reputations on lies.
Would you like to know who truly WILL care for these unwanted animals?
Breed rescues, cat rescues, all the private rescues will help. OSPCA? Euths them.
I DO NOT WANT TO BE AN OSPCA basher.
Only after the public takes off their rosy coloured glasses will anything change. You too, Jill. If you find a stray, sign it’s death warrant, and take it to the “shelter”. Sick of your kitten, sadly now a cat? Take it to the shelter, and it will die. People NEED to know the truth.
“no kill shelters eventually become full (generally over-filled, disease filled, warehouses IMO)…where do the animals go then?” To heaven.
The OSPCA IS a high-kill shelter. Explain then, how their shelter became so disease ridden? Oh, right, it wasn’t. They just needed more space for that big screen TV.
They were closed for those renovations for 11 months. tell me please, how on earth they afforded that.
If I am to ever support them again, I need to know they are HELPING animals. Not just killing them, or ignoring them, hiding behind the laws they have no interest in changing.
