Living in the the Northwest Territories, Canada has many challenges.  One of which is to receive mail in a timely fashion.

A month ago, I ordered re-known author Craig C. Downer’s “The Wild Horse Conspiracy” directly from Craig himself……..well I am pleased to say that this  (should be) award winning book finally arrived.

Craig Downer is one of the strongest voices to be heard defending the American Wild Horses and Burros.  His research, his findings, evidence that indeed the origin of the equids of the North Americas dates back thousands of years is proof positive that these magnificent animals are not disposable items, that they are an intrinsic and valuable asset to the environment, that they are by inherent birth right, by their very survival throughout the centuries, most worthy of our admiration, our protection.

People!!! 

There is a WAR raging in the backyards of North America.  A WAR fueled by the propaganda of self interest groups, hell bent on the vile and unnecessary complete extermination of one of the most valuable and historically significant creatures found on this Continent.

  We CANNOT allow this war to continue.

Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people; and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the American scene. It is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands. 

Clearly the current Administration and the current actions of the Bureau of Land Management, has completely undermined, ignored and under the influence of “special interest groups” has chosen to violate the provisions for protection legislated in 1971.

Hello Craig:

I began reading your book in the quiet of this morning….first I must congratulate you sincerely …..  your commitment and dedication to the equines stands as a shining light for all to see.  While I have done research of my own on the plight of the animals here in the NT, I cannot even begin to fathom the hours, the finances needed to do the research that you have done over the years, the expenses incurred to travel as you have and the thousands of dedicated hours taken from your family and friends in compiling this research and presenting it in such an eloquent form.

Nor can I fathom the questionable methods used by the bureaucracy and self interest groups to squash, defame, deny and likely destroy the amazing evidence proving the lineage of the wild horses and burros of today.  Clearly much of it has been in violation of the protection act established to preserve the lands and habitat given to the mustangs and burros so many years ago.  To know that the united front of the (anti-horse nation) as I will now call it, extends far beyond the US is mind blowing.

The optimism which you share in your book, believing that positive change will come, is inspiring, however, I must wonder if we will ever see such change occur in our lifetime, or even in the next generation.  War, as I have always maintained, is big business, Big $$, and whether it is war between the human species or is against the animals…there are $$ to be made.  As long as funding to Political parties is being made by private interest (agenda) groups, our animals and the environment will meet with devastation and extinction.  We see it with the horses, we have seen it with the buffalo, wolves, polar bears…we have witnessed the devastation of the Gulf Oil Spill, the Dirty Oil out of Alberta, the Cdn Seal Hunt,  the rapid melting of the Arctic and the effects of Global Warming on the Arctic wildlife and habitat, not to mention the devastation of clear cutting the rain forests, devastation of clear cutting, mining….all of it for profit in the name of continued unabated greed.

It is most unnerving, unsettling and a hugely derogatory statement on humanity that we owe all of this destruction to ourselves.  The blame lay squarely on the shoulders of mankind and what humans consider to be progress.  It has long been my belief that we ourselves shall be our downfall, our reliance on fossil fuels and technology have wiped out our inherent ability to survive without such things, and our quest for increasing technology, material gain…blinds us to that which is truly important…Harmony and the ability to exist with our bretherin….all manner of animal life learned to exist in harmony millions of years ago….humans failed to.  We are the dismal failure in the evolutionary process.  Somewhere along the way humans chose to dominate and control rather than to adapt and co-exist in harmony with Mother Earth and all of nature…we are seeing her anger now and we shall see our own undoing.

I take some solace in knowing that there are so many of us out there who raise our voices, that our numbers are growing, and to all I am so very grateful.  If even one animal is saved, one life is spared, is allowed to exist in the freedom (their birthright) then something has been accomplished.

I shall loudly shout that your book is a MUST READ.

Animals’ Angels, an animal welfare organizationin Maryland, last week received over 900……… horse slaughter.

The large FOIA document contains hundreds of photographs that graphically depict horses with open fractures, legs missing, battered and bloody faces, eyeballs dangling and what appears to be horses left to bleed to death. The document provides unimpeachable evidence for the immediate ban on the slaughter of American horses.
