FOR THE LOVE OF LOKI 2.jpegA couple of weeks ago I put up the poster in order to raise funds for LOKI.  A deadline date had been given to me of May 31st to get him off the streets of Hay River, NT.  Thankfully I was able to obtain a time extension from Town Officials.

Darting of Loki was planned for this past Friday, June 1, however the ENR Officer who will be darting Loki for me, came by the house mid afternoon Friday, and due to the number of calls he had to go out on concerning bears, as well as lynx, the darting of LOKI was postponed.  New time and date is yet to be set up.

LOKI was here yesterday, actually wanted to know what I was doing in my storage shed, he is the curious type. He also joined in the walk with ‘Henri’, and the two young ladies walking their kids in their strollers, yesterday. The women live a few doors down from me, and Loki regularly walks with them when they take the kids out. He looked so proud and happy, trotting in front of them, head and tail held high.

He had a good brunch and long drink of cool water in my backyard with me yesterday, and I was with him on Friday as well.

The ENR Officer checked out the dog run, and felt I had everything set up well for Loki; I washed out a large pet bed of Hemi’s for him, used $83.78 of the donations to purchase a 20′ nylon lunge line, a 15′ heavy duty tie out, a humane nylon training collar, and a regular wide nylon collar and leash. The lunge line I will use as an ‘umbilical cord’ which will be attached to my person and to Loki so that where I go he will go.

I wrapped a tarp around one end of the dog run, on the outside, which will give Loki additional shade and a hiding spot from curious eyes from the road. I also hung the fake wasp/hornet nests in the backyard trees, that deter those nasties from coming around. The screening has been ordered to enclose the whole dog run but has yet to arrive. This will keep all the nasties out so that he will not be a meal to those awful bugs.

I also cut down and trimmed the trees and cut down the wild roses out back, as I don’t want any of them spreading into the run. Those thorns are nasty. Today I will remove the remnants of the brush, lumber and continue getting the backyard ready for him so that when I bring him out of the run, we will have no obstructions or anything he can get tangled into.

What with the Town extending the deadline date, and with the ENR Officer  having to go out on bear calls, it may have been just as well that I did not get Loki here on Friday. The vet will be back mid June I believe, so if darting is still a week away that may be a good thing if the vet is available.

In the meantime, I will spend time with Loki as we have been all along. When he was here yesterday he did not seem at all nervous to be eating near the dog run at all..another good thing, he has accepted that it is in my backyard now.

I received a lovely call from Jean M  (Ontario) last evening, which came as quite the surprise. Of course we talked about Loki. Jean follows Loki’s FB page

 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-LOKI-Sole-survivor/188340937903082?fref=ts

I must tell all of you that if it were not for the donations that came in from Ontario, BC and Alberta, none of this would be possible. Loki received one donation from a Hay River resident, despite the article being published in the paper here, the posters that I put up everywhere in town and the posters I put on the local online groups here in the NWT. To say that I am extremely disappointed and hurt by the lack of donations here in town and across the NWT is an understatement given the 3 year battle I went through at my own personal expense to get the new NWT Dog Act legislated.

A very special thank you to Darlene, with a rescue organization in Ontario for having held a fund raiser for Loki.  Those whom Darlene was able to get donations from have certainly helped this cause.  Fund raisers are not easy, they are time consuming, require volunteers and are a lot of work to put together.

It is what it is, as they say. Once Loki and I begin this new chapter in our journey together, all will remain in God’s hands, just as it has been since we began our journey in October 2010.

DCFN0005.JPG

This is one of the earlier pictures of LOKI back in 2010, when I first began going out to him.  He was a youngster at this time.  Every day, often 3 times daily, I would make the trek across the ravine, bringing him food and fresh water.  At that time we were building trust, he did not come to my property at all back then.  He would play hide and seek in the dandilions   Dec 19 2012 012

Loki has come a very long way from that scrawny scared  youngster, he is now a magnificent, beautiful and mature gentle soul, who deserves a loving forever home which I fully intend to give to him.

Before the snow flies once again in October, my goal is to have Loki feeling comfortable enough to be bringing him inside, being friends with all my own pets, except I will keep my bunny away from him, and looking forward to the warmth and safety of his forever home. He won’t have to hold up against frigid winds, blowing snow, rains and all manner of crazy weather, alone out there and be a meal to bulldogs, mosquitoes and other nasties.

Sunday Afternoon Oct 15 2011 024  Here in my backyard last summer, we enjoyed quiet time together, and now this will be his permanent backyard, where he will be safe, protected and very much loved and cared for.

LOKI wishes to thank all of those total strangers in Ontario, BC and Alberta, he has never met, who have rallied around him, who have made donations, who have put in the time and energy to raise funds for him, he thanks the two reporters who published his story, and he also wants to thank all of you who continue to message and email their support, encouragement and love.

First off I wish to thank Lilianna with the Examiner for having done such a wonderful job in putting together her amazing article at the link below.  She has included a photo gallery as well as a beautiful video that I took last Fall.

http://www.examiner.com/article/saving-hay-river-s-beloved-loki .  I also want to thank those wonderful individuals who have enough love in their hearts for LOKI that they have reached into their pockets, and who are emailing and messaging me, with their sincere support and encouragement along with their prayers for both he and I.

     Donations came in fast and furious at the start, which covered the cost of the Dog run which is now on my property. May 2013 106  I will be securing the floor to the run today.  The dog run has already been paid for out of what donations came in, which greatly depleted the account set up for him at the RBC.   My estimated goal is far from being reached.

     Having made contact with an ENR Officer here in town, arrangements have been made that this individual who knows LOKI well, as does his young son, will dart LOKI with a tranquilizer in order to capture hm and get him to my property.  The sedatives needed must be provided by the Alberta veterinarian and shipped in from Alberta.  I do not know as yet what cost to myself this will mean.

     When asked by the only media reporter in the NWT that contacted me why I was raising funds, I responded by saying …. Being the sole income support for my family, is the reason that this fund raising campaign was launched.  The dog run could never have been purchased, had not donations started coming in as fast as they did.  A deadline to get Loki off the streets by May 31st has been extended, however, it was not made clear by Town officials how much more time I have.

     The donations which have come in have been from caring persons back home in Ontario, some from Alberta and BC by e-transfer.

     Additional  Funds are needed to cover the cost of screening to protect LOKI from the horrible insects such as bulldogs who take huge chunks out of anything that lives, heavy duty dive bombing mosquitoes and of course the clouds of sand flies up here.  Veterinary costs that will include a complete physical, heart worm testing, complete immunization and also neuter, and whatever else he will need initially.

       Messages and comments have been coming in fast and furious both to my email bc_dawson@hotmail.com and to LOKI’s FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-LOKI-Sole-Survivor/188340937903082?fref=ts

        I continue to be awed and inspired with the messages of love towards him so many are sending.  LOKI has touched the hearts of so many since I began chronicling our journey three years ago.  You can view his many videos on http://www.youtube.com/user/TundraVoices?feature=watch

Dec 19 2012 029   Loki remains at large for now, date scheduled for his darting has yet to be set, as the sedatives have yet to come in from Alberta.

    Soon his freedom will become lost to him, and the long and patient work both on his part and mine will begin once he is here with me.  I promised him from the very start that I would never ever give up on him, and I will keep that promise.  I also promised him just the other night, that we will continue to take our long and beautiful walks together in this pristine Northern Boreal Forest area together just as we always have, only this time he will have to leashed.

     Loki has never know the warmth of a loving hug, he has never known the comfort of laying beside a warm wood stove on a frigid winters night, he has never known the comfort of a secure, safe and loving home.  No doubt about it, there will be a difficult period of adjustment for him, even greater trust must be built before I will be able to truly handle him, put a collar or harness on him for our walks together.  But I will Never give up on him, on us.

     LOKI and I  still need your help to raise funds for him.

      LOKI by any other name IS A SURVIVOR.  Now with your help his continued life can be secured in a safe and loving forever home.

      Donations can be made by e-transfer, the easiest method.  If doing this way please notify me by using my email address so that  I will know the security password you are using and I can then email you back a confirmation number issued as a receipt…..bc_dawson@hotmail.com
Checks or money order can be mailed (please personally email me for that information).  Thank you.

       Please help me keep LOKI alive, healthy and safe…to give him the loving home he deserves but has never known.

       We, LOKI and I, wish to thank all of you who have already contributed, and we thank any of you who are planning to do so.

FOR THE LOVE OF LOKI 2.jpegThe end to LOKI’s freedom is drawing close and funds are needed to purchase the needed dog run and to cover the initial veterinary costs for his vaccinations and eventual neutering.

The logistics of his capture have yet to be figured out as there is no resident vet in Hay River, and I am unsure if tranquilizer gun is even available here.

Due to my continued work with him, and out of respect for and a sympathetic gesture, I was immediately contacted with the news that he must be removed from the streets.  I of course will take him here to my home, to care and give him a loving home for the rest of his days.  If I do not do this then the Town Officials will step in and likely LOKI will not survive.

Donations can be made by e- transfer or mail.  An account has been set up for Loki at:

Royal Bank of Canada,

77 Woodland Drive,

Hay River, NT X0E 1G1

RBC clients may do an online transfer or at their own branch.  Other banking institutions can do e-transfers directly to the Account set up for Loki.  A confirmation # will be provided to all donors when the e-transfer has gone through to his account.

Clients of other institutions may also do transfers at their own institution or send a check or money order, but it will have to be made payable to Bonnie Dawson (For the Love of Loki) and mailed to the above bank address.

To obtain the Bank #, Transit and Account # for transfers please email me at bc_dawson@hotmail.com

or message me here through a comment and I can then email you directly with the needed account information.

I have set it up through the bank rather than through PayPal as I feel this affords more credibility and will lend itself to a paper trail.

I am appealing to the followers and lovers of LOKI to be his Angels and to ensure his continued safety and care.

With deepest thanks,

LOKI and I.

Having had many discussions with a delightfully intelligent individual very much concerned about what is going on with the Doberman Pinscher, note this individuals expertise is with these amazing canines, also please note that he and I became friends while he was within Canada and a co-worker….I have been contacted and asked to get this petition ‘Out There’.

Once you link into the Petition below, you will be able to translate to the language of your choice.

Everywhere around the world there are unscrupulous breeders, backyard breeders and puppy mills.  We are all aware of that.  Innocent pups are born with severe health defects every day, and the unsuspecting individual who chooses to adopt or purchase one of these pups faces the agony ahead..watching their beloved pet become gravely ill and meeting an all too early death.

Please support this petition and send to all you can.

Thank you for your support.

“AWHPC’s lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over its plans to castrate wild, free-roaming stallions in Nevada’s Pancake Complex achieved another milestone last week. On May 9, 2012, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell issued a ruling ordering the BLM to consider scientific evidence submitted by AWHPC regarding the negative impacts of castration on individual wild stallions and on the herds as a whole. Judge Howell warned that the agency could not remain “studiously ignorant of material scientific evidence.” (Please see AWHPC’s press release here and the Courthouse News Service’s article here for more information.)”

Meat From Horses Not Raised For Food Presents Public Health Hazard

“April 10, 2012 (Larkspur, Colorado) — Through its own investigation, Front Range Equine Rescue (FRER) has discovered that Valley Meats Co., 3845 Cedarvale Rd., in Roswell, NM, has applied for inspection of horses to be “custom slaughtered” and “processed” for human consumption. According to the facts uncovered, the facility has been involved in extended discussions with the Denver office of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The FSIS inspects animals and meat in American slaughterhouses under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Horse slaughter for food is a national disgrace, given the iconic nature of American horses and the especially brutal methods used to kill them.”

Update April 12, 2012

The Refuge is still in dire need of the funds.      Here is an excerpt from a message of April 7, 2012,  from Rose, owner of RR
“To be honest with you not much money is coming in for the water…It’s is a very touchy situation where most people in cities and suburbs don’t understand how there can be no water…Well water sometimes is not a permanent source of water and unlucky for us….we have to dig another well.”

 Bloggers Note:  Water is having to be hauled in for the horses by Rose herself, often from neighboring areas.  This has been an ongoing problem for some time and she needs to have a new well drilled on her property.

There is a fundraiser planned for April 28th, 2012 in Pointe Claire.

Readers who are following this Blog are aware of the ongoing agenda of big business, bureaucrats and self interest groups across the U.S. and unfortunately within Canada as well, to seemingly contribute to the extinction of  yet another iconic native species and a symbol of the wild thereby denying future generations of their inherent freedom that is this animal’s birthright.

All across the U.S. and  in Canada as well, magnificent healthy horses are being either rounded up (if they are wild), held in inadequate holding pens, often denied fresh water, clean food supplies, injured, terrified and are then crammed into transport trucks headed to slaughter houses in Mexico and Canada.  Crammed into trucks where they are unable to move, driven without rest, food, water for incredible distances, held captive in a steal box often for up to 50 hours if not longer…headed down the highway to oblivion.

Why is this happening…GREED!!!!!  Are you surprised?

You should not be.

Every second of every single day, one species of animal becomes extinct, wiped off the face of this planet never to be seen again.

  Why?

Due to the incessant progress of a more (self declared) advanced civilization…that continually exploits wildlife, domestic animals, the land, the waters..

WHY?

To further fill the coffers of not only themselves, but also the bureaucrats dependent upon the political donations provided by Self Interest Materialistically motivated Big Business enterprises.

Be it the devastation of the Rain Forests and subsequent loss of habitat and extinction of native species, to the mining giants who disrupt migration routes, pollute and scar the land and destroy the waters, to the Government funded programs that place wealth and capital over the lives of the innocent, this unending saga continues and will continue until such time as those who FIGHT for the inherent rights of these animals, the inherent RIGHTS of ourselves and our Grandchildren to live in a world free from the devastation to our environment and wildlife are actually HEARD.

Think about this.

Evolution:  Animals have evolved with the ability to ADAPT to their changing environment.  They have successfully adapted to live in HARMONY with their environment and other species!!!!

What has our species done?

We have adapted the environment to suit our needs, we have NOT learned to live in HARMONY with the environment nor the native species that are entrusted in our care.

The following compilation is taken from the countless emails, alerts and efforts made by so many dedicated people FIGHTING the GOOD FIGHT.

I would also like to take this opportunity to strongly urge anyone and everyone who is opposed to this obvious AGENDA, to the complete extinction of Wild Horses period, to invest in a true learning experience…..

“The Wild Horse Conspiracy” (amazon.com) written by Mr. Craig C. Downer is a must.  Proof positive can be found in Mr. Downer’s extensive research, that the current equids roaming across North America are NATIVE to our lands.

Fossil evidence has been identified that dispels the long held myth and spewed propaganda  that NATIVE North American horses became extinct during the Pleistocene era.  Unfortunately the extreme efforts to discredit this evidence continues.

To quote,  with Mr  Downer’s permission: Excerpts from “The Wild Horse Conspiracy”

“All branches of the horse family (Equidae) share an ancient evolutionary origin and long-standing duration in North America”..

“During the mid 1990′s, horse remains were discovered by placer miners, in the Yukon…The fact that the Yukon horse is genetically identical with the modern horse reveals the latter to be one of the most deeply rooted and justifiable natives in North America.”

Revised regulations adopted by the West Virginia Racing Commission would allow the agency to take action against permit holders found to have knowingly sold a horse for slaughter.It is believed to be a first in the United States for the licensing of Thoroughbred permit holders. The regulations also allow for action in cases of horse abuse.

This Blogger’s Comment:  Right now the Leaders of both the US and Canada are attending a summit outside of our home country.  Big bucks to send them there.  Big bucks spent to formulate negotiations, trade agreements, discuss world politics and policy.  What about cleaning up the backyards of our own countries, tending to the needs within the US and Canada, facing the LOUD voices protesting the continued round ups and slaughter of thousands of magnificent equids in the US and Canada.  What about putting into place measures to ensure the survival of these historical icons, what about honoring the “unanimously passed Public Law 92-195 and that are supported by many millions of ordinary U.S. citizens as well as people worldwide. ” ?????

BACKGROUNDER:

Dr. Hedy Fry’s bill: An Act to amend the Canadian Criminal Code (animal cruelty)

• Introduces the term ‘negligent’ and defines it as “departing markedly from the standard of care that a reasonable person would use”;
• Makes it an offense to kill any animal without a lawful excuse. Lawful excuse includes: hunting, fishing, farming, euthanasia, and protection of life and property. THESE PRACTICES ARE FULLY PROTECTED;
• Makes it an offence to kill an animal with ‘brutal or vicious intent’, whether or not the animal dies immediately;
• Introduces a definition of ‘animal’ and defines it as “a vertebrate, other than a human being”;
• Includes specific offences for poisoning, injuring or killing a law enforcement animal while it is working;
Moves animal cruelty out of the property section of the criminal code to better reflect contemporary Canadian values of seeing animals not merely as chattel but as beings capable or pain and suffering;
• Makes it an offense to train an animal to fight or receive money for animal fighting and training;
• Applies to all vertebrates equally whether or not they are owned or un-owned (wild, stray, etc.);
• Allows for a lifetime prohibition on future animal ownership (up from the current maximum of two years) and a minimum five-year prohibition for second or subsequent offences;
• Allows judges to order anyone convicted of cruelty to animals to pay restitution (such as veterinary bills and shelter costs) to the animal welfare organization that subsequently cared for the animal(s).
• Provides greater flexibility in sentencing by allowing animal cruelty crimes to be prosecuted as summary conviction or indictable offenses. Maximum penalties for an indictable offense would increase to a jail term of up to five years and unlimited fines; and for summary convictions, a maximum jail sentence of up to eighteen months and fine of up to $10,000.00.

Stone Free Brindi

Jimi say, “Turn her loose, baby!”

Brindi has never, ever, bitten a child or an adult. Nor has she ever inflicted anything worse more than a few tiny “spots” (direct quote from dog owner) on another dog. She has what is called “good bite inhibition”. And because of that, and the fact that her excellent trainer stands behind her and her guardian, Francesca Rogier, she should be freed and given the same tolerance and understanding Halifax animal control gives to scores of other dogs who have committed worse transgressions!
But despite this, her good obedience training (Francesca’s hard work) and several positive behavioral assessments, Halifax still locked her up for nearly four years. And is still locking her up. Her health has suffered, needless to say. A trial is underway and it does not look very good at the moment, hence the need to solicit help from higher powers.

A lot of people have turned a cold shoulder to Brindi and F… more

Premier Dalton McGuinty: Do not pass revised ‘Bill 37′ for changes to animal rights protection

https://www.change.org/petitions/premier-dalton-mcguinty-do-not-pass-revised-bill-37-for-changes-to-animal-rights-protection

After public outcry and strong criticism, MPP Jack MacLaren of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario withdrew private members Bill 37 but is now introducing The Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act, 2012 in its place on Monday, March 19th, at Queen’s Park.  This new bill will hand over inspection rights for farm animals to members of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). This will undermine the protection of farm animals. This revised bill has a clear conflict of interest and bias. Passage of the Bill would provide for zero transparency and accountability in a notoriously inhumane industry. Imagine, the very people who slaughter animals for food will be the ones to “ensure” standards are maintained. It is unconscionable to hand over the welfare of farm animals to any group that has vested interests in the agriculture industry. Indeed, there is such an inappropriate bias here that it is insulting.

Also, under Bill 37, farmers will be allowed to call in their own veterinarians to determine whether abuse exists. Veterinarians who are paid by these farmers and make a living through servicing these farmers’ animals will, in many cases, not want to cause trouble and “bite the hands that feed them”, so they will be compelled to look the other way.

Separating farm animals’ rights from those of ‘pets’ also makes the point that farm animals do not deserve the same care and protection, that they are ‘products’, which is ludicrous. All animals suffer and feel pain and should be afforded equal protection.

There are also concerns about whether police officers have sufficient specialized knowledge of animal husbandry to recognize distress, whether they have the skills to deal with exotic, dangerous or aggressive animals and whether the police service has enough resources to take on this extra role.

Please send an email to MPP Tim Hudak (tim.hudakco@pc.ola.org) and Ontario’s MPPs, politely asking that they not support this Bill.
