The Issue:

 Oil Sands  Propaganda

Quoted from the AAEV:( Environmental Voters Party of Canada) : “Harper intends to make toothless most of the legal and regulatory framework that protects Canada’s environment and animals. The Species at Risk Act, the Fisheries Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the National Energy Board, all these and more are being gutted, hamstrung, neutered to give Harper-friendly industries unfettered license to degrade, to destroy, to kill the environment and animals. All to fuel their reckless drive for profit – and damn the cost!”

In a message from Director, Liz White:

“The Harper Conservatives have declared war on environmental charities.  They’ve threatened them with the Canada Revenue Agency persecuting them and revoking their charitable status if they speak out honestly and accurately about Canada’s most environmentally destructive industries.  It’s for this reason that Dr. David Suzuki was forced to resign from his own foundation.  It was the only way he could be free to speak out.”

“The Minister at the Canada Revenue Agency which the Conservatives will use to persecute environmental charities is none other than Gail Shea, the former Fisheries Minister who waged war on harp seals and grey seals with deceit, bogus science, and baseless slander against animal protection groups.  She’ll relish persecuting green charities.”

We continue to be inundated with high cost television ads touting the benefits of continued Oil Sands development and expansion. Our tax dollars fuel the placement of this advertisement.  We continue to have our own Canadian researchers allegedly gagged when new findings need to be revealed to the public.

We continue to bathed in propaganda…..what we are not bathed in are facts….

As a concerned Environmentalist I strongly suggest that the sites below be visited.

To quote a recent article in the Northern Journal, one of the best publications, at least in my opinion, that comes out of Canada’s Arctic region and which has no fear of presenting the truth to its readers:

“Fish deformities in Alberta,US linked to oil pollution: scientist”

Excerpts are taken from the article written by Meagan Wohlberg in the Northern Journal, Vol.36 No.48

“Renowned scientist David Schindler says deformities found on fish in the Athabasca River..are remarkably similar to those found on fish in the Gulfs of Mexico and Alaska following devastating oil spills.”

Schindler, a scientist with the University of Alberta, helped to link ‘carcinogenic contaminants found in the nearby snowpack in northeastern Alberta’ to the ‘oilsands upgraders’.

Schindler stated in his letter to Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment and Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, according to the Northern Journal:

“Given the parallels in the cases from various locations, it seems likely that some chemical or suite of chemicals in crude oil is causing the malformations.”  Here he is referring to the “remarkable similarities” (abnormalities) found on the fish found in the Athabasca River as well as in the Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe and as well in the Gulf of Alaska after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.  Deformities in fish found in the Great Lakes within the areas where there is heavy industrialization also points at the poisonous effect of industrial waste contaminants .

Schindler has also requested that the outdoor lab  (The Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario (ELA) be kept open as it is under threat of closure due to the decision of the Federal Government to cut the $2M yearly funding it receives.  The only outdoor lab of its kind in the world, has been shut down temporarily in March, while the Feds are looking for ‘a new group to take it over’ according to the Northern Journal.

According to Schindler, Environment Canada scientists do a very good job of monitoring the river, however, as Mr. Schindler also states “it will be impossible to determine which chemicals are responsible for the malformations in the complex chemical soup downstream of oilsands mining.”

These PAH’s : “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylated derivatives or closely related dibenzothiphenes” are “suspected or known to cause cancer, mutations or deformities in embryos  and are linked to immune suppression.”

Bloggers Notations:

With the gutting of Environmental Protection in Canada, our waterways and land, our environment period, is now suffering the consequences.  Open Season on the Traditional Way of Life for First Nations, and the overall Canadian environment/heritage  appears to have been declared and the legacy to be left for future generations is at best questionable.

While all across the U.S. and Canada, wild unpredictable weather is reeking havoc, Asia, Europe is reaping the rewards of Global Warming.  We are witness to the horrors through our televisions and the Internet and we pray for those who suffer devastating loss of life and property.

Here in the Canadian North, the ‘Land of Snow and Ice’ as this area has been labelled by so many, Ole Man Winter comes very early.  His visit is lengthy and the big melt here is not seen until well into May.

Born and raised in Canada’s capital I now I chose to leave the rhetoric behind, moving North in 2005, I now  live in a wonderful community in the Town of  Hay River, NT.  We are North of 60, and smack in the middle of the largest remaining Boreal Forest in North America.  Situated on the shores of the Great Slave Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in North America.  Hay River is a small community, approximate population of about 3200-3600 residents ,predominantly First Nations, and a mixture Caucasians and various other cultures.  We are a community that cares about each other, that reach out to help and support one another.

Ole Man Winter hit us on October 23rd, our days are now much shorter, our dark nights yet to become longer still.

Rather than dwell upon the disastrous events happening around the world, I would like to share with all of you, this little piece of heaven that I have called home since 2006.  The tree shown in my backyard is where Loki and I normally spent our time during the summer, me laying next to the tree with him stretched out in front of me.  A quiet place to have quality time.

The small wooden bridge I cross in the summer to get across the ravine  is now covered in waist deep snow.

During summer, across the ravine, Loki’s domain is filled with lush greenery, wildflowers, even wild clover and most abundant wild roses.  It is spectacular, to sit with him in this untouched beauty.

Beautiful is it not?

The evening skies are spectacular.  The colours vivid and glorious, making one feel very small and very grateful to bare witness to the beauty that surrounds one.

We have gone now from the lush green of summer to the realities of a cold, long and often very harsh winter. Wind chills dropping the temperatures to -40 and even lower in communities further North.   I continue to be amazed how the land sleeps here blanketed in Snow and Ice.  I marvel at how the smallest of birds survive, so tiny and fragile that they are.

We have gone from this:

To this:  in just 3 days, October 23,24 and 25th.  Given that it is reported that we received 68 c.m. in that short period of time and that our yearly average snowfall is only 124 cm, I must speculate on what is yet to come.

The tree in my backyard that gave comfort during summer to Loki and I, now hangs with the weight of wet snow.  The wonderland of colour in Loki’s summer domain is now buried under a blanket of white.  The land sleeps now, resting until Spring, a very long long way off now.

Ever majestic in beauty, Loki’s world is transformed, the air clean and crisp, the winter chill letting one know that you are alive, the quiet time, even quieter and ever more special to be shared with Loki.

I hope you will enjoy the next pictures of him as much as I enjoy my time with him.  He is definitely a Survivor, a gentle soul, one that without his knowledge opened my eyes to that which I had so long ago stopped appreciating.  We are all too often caught up in the irrelevant demands that we allow placed upon us and which we place upon ourselves.  Please visit Loki’s Page on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-LOKI-Sole-Survivor/188340937903082?ref=ts&fref=ts and view his videos on YouTube: TundraVoices:   such as this one:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrqoARVHZNE&feature=share&list=ULMrqoARVHZNE

Lindsay pond beaver now WITHOUT a home!!

Last year concerned citizens raised the Red Flag and protested the trapping of the Lindsay Pond beavers and the planned destruction of their dam.  A reprieve was the result.

Unfortunately Mayor Watson of Ottawa recently decided it would be a good thing to do.  Now there is a push on to flood Ottawa Mayor Watson’s office with emails and telephone calls protesting this action.

As a former Ottawa resident, born and raised in the Nation’s Capital, I find it totally appalling and totally unacceptable that this politician took it upon himself to destroy the home of these animals.  It takes months for beavers to build their home, further they are symbolic of Canada, a symbol of our heritage.  How dare he!!!

Please loudly speak out for these beavers.  Video link is provided below of the destruction of their home.  I have requested to be allowed to publish pictures taken of the beavers and will post when available.

This is my own personal letter to Mayor Watson sent a moment ago.

With All Due Respect to your Honor, Jim Watson
Mayor of our Nation’s Capital

Mr. Watson:

It is with great sadness that I have been made aware that despite the protests which you received in 2011 concerning the Lindsay Pond beavers, that you have indeed chosen to destroy the habitat of these industrious National Heritage Symbols of Canada.

Having been born an raised in Ottawa, I am more than familiar with the area in question.

While you listened in 2011 to the voices raised in protest at the planned destruction of this dam you have totally chosen to ignore these very same voices raised in 2012.

It is appalling and disgusting to me, the negative actions which you have taken with regard to this beaver habitat.  It is further appalling and disgusting, sir, that you chose to ignore the taxpaying electorate whom employ your position, office and staff.

Your actions shall be remembered.

Respectfully,

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter…the cast-offs of human society.

I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry.
“God,” I said, “this is terrible! Why don’t you do something?”
God was silent for a moment, and then He spoke softly, “I have done something,” he replied. “I created you.”

The new 2012 Federal Budget is targeting environmentalists/Groups by stipulating that “charitable organizations WILL NOT be able to register as donors and receive income tax credits unless they are pursuing activities “in the national interest of Canada.”  Those opposing Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline have been accused by Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver of being “foreign funded radicals.”
Question:  IS IT NOT IN THE ” national interest of Canada” TO protect OUR ENVIRONMENT, OUR LAND, OUR WATER, OUR WILDLIFE????? IS IT NOT IN THE ” national interest of Canada” TO PROTECT OUR HERITAGE, TO ENSURE THAT FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL ACTUALLY HAVE A PRISTINE CANADA TO RAISE THEIR OWN FAMILIES??
Apparently to Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, apparently to the current Prime Minister of Canada and to the Conservative Party now in power, none of this matters whatsoever as long as our countries continued exploitation and sell out moves forward as planned.
Harper’s plan “to block foreign funding of environmental organizations” has far reaching implications.  ForestEthics Advocacy was formed by “breaking off” as a “new arm of the registered charity,ForestEthics in order to engage in political activity following the budget announcement.”
ANIMAL ALLIANCE ENVIRONMENT VOTERS PARTY OF CANADA (AAEV)
IS THE ONLY REGISTERED POLITICAL PARTY IN CANADA
FOCUSED ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND ANIMAL PROTECTION ISSUES
As a Registered Political Party the AAEV is in the position whereby they are able to engage activity opposing the Conservative plans to Sell Out Canada, to gut Environmental protection and “to degrade, to destroy, to kill the environment and animals” .   As a Registered Political Party donations in support of the AAEV are Contributions to a Canadian Political Party and are therefore issued Tax Receipts which may be claimed on individual Tax Returns.
Having myself, represented the AAEV during the 2011 Federal Election, I am very proud to say that I did receive votes here in the NWT.  I am extremely proud to be part of an amazing organization that continues to fight to protect Canada and my support will continue.

Thank you Franke James..your presentation is brilliant.

Bloggers note:  please take the time to read this and to pass onto others.  As a Free Nation Canadians can no longer afford to allow our environment, waters and animals to be exploited, poisoned and destroyed.

Those that speak out against such atrocities have been labelled by MP Joe Oliver, Minister of the Environment, as terrorists……WE ARE NOT……we believe in our country and all that it stands for….we want to PROTECT our country for future generations….we VALUE our country and honor those who have died to PROTECT our Rights and Freedoms to freely express our concerns, our displeasure and the Sell Out of this Great Land.

URGENT !!   Canada -  Our rights, under attack! / URGENT! Canada – Nos droits, sous attaque!

Bill 78 will affect many non-radical animal activists, who hold “PEACEFUL” demonstrations against all forms of animal cruelty.   Please read the article below, sign, circulate and post to your sites. Thanks!

Merci !

Dear friends across Canada,

Québec Premier Jean Charest just enacted a draconian emergency law restricting the most basic rights of free assembly — all to quash students protesting tuition hikes. Sign the petition now to stand up for the basic Canadian values of free speech and assembly and call for an end to this law:

Québec Premier Jean Charest just enacted a draconian emergency law restricting the most basic rights of free assembly. The law could turn Canada into an international embarrassment — making us look more like the Middle Eastern police states the Arab Spring just overthrew — unless we show the world that Canadians reject this type of outdated suppression.

The emergency law, known as Bill 78, imposes massive fines of up to $125,000 for organizing peaceful protests — the most basic right of free democracies. And anyone hoping to gather just 50 people must give police 8 hours notice! Legal scholars are uniform in declaring the law unconstitutional, but while we wait for the courts to strike it down, free speech is in jeopardy. Let’s join together and show leaders everywhere Canadians reject this attack on basic rights and that all suppression will bring is a stronger opposition.

Our country’s constitutional rights and international reputation are at risk. Join the call and forward to everyone — if we reach 50,000 signers, Avaaz will erect giant protesters in front of Montreal representatives’ offices to bring our national call home to politicians:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/quebec_protests/?vl

The freedom to peacefully assemble is a fundamental right enshrined in the Canadian constitution. It’s a basic right respected throughout the democratic world and now the Québec government is trampling all over it. When governments try to change the rules of the game like this to suppress their opponents, one of two things happen: freedom begins to wither or the backlash leads to a brighter and freer day. Right now, police are already cracking down: over 300 people were arrested at once on Sunday night. But if we stand together, we can ensure that our voices lead to a better tomorrow.

The student demonstrations over tuition hikes that provoked this over-the-top response have been largely peaceful. A small group of radicals and overzealous police shouldn’t be allowed to destroy Montreal or our basic rights and values. But instead of directing police to respect protesters, Premier Charest decided to fan the flames by passing this backwards bill. This is not the way democracies deal with legitimate debate and it’s time we show Charest and the rest of our country’s Premiers that citizens everywhere will not stand for being silenced or intimidated.

Join the call to repeal Bill 78′s attack on our rights — click here to sign:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/quebec_protests/?vl

Throughout the world, peaceful demonstrations have overcome repressive backlashes. At a moment when even the Middle East is overthrowing emergency laws intended to suppress, Canada shouldn’t be going backwards. Let’s join the spirit of the day and show that we too are capable of overcoming ignorance, fear and abuse of power.

With hope,

Emma, Ari, Ricken, Mélanie, Laryn and the rest of the Avaaz team
