Normally Saturdays and Sundays, better known as a weekend, are the times a person can actually sleep in before getting to the tasks around the house..tackling that TO DO LIST…which always seems to get longer each weekend..know the feeling???

Well for this Blogger, rising early..as it happens..6 a.m. this morning…means having the extra time to catch up on Blog posts, spend time with LOKI during his breakfast, visiting with all his buddies that he brings along..this morning the guests were Fiddle, Henri and Charlie..Charlie got extra cuddles this morning.

Henir with Loki

…and then booting up the computer, answering emails, and putting together new post updates..once the posts are done..then putting them up on my various sites.  Sometime today..I will get my own TO DO LIST widdled down I hope.  Note:  that I say that every weekend!!

Oppose Latest Assault on Wild Horses: BLM Plans to Replace Wild Stallions with Geldings on the Range

Proposed Action for Nevada’s Pancake Complex Is a Triple Assault on Wild Horse Populations

http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6931/t/0/blastContent.jsp?email_blast_KEY=1181536

The Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is at it again! This time with the three worse-case scenarios included in one roundup proposal:

  • the massive roundup of 1,000 wild horses;
  • the castration of wild stallions and replacement of wild-free roaming mustangs with geldings; and
  • the zeroing-out of an entire Herd Area (HA), permanently removing all wild horses while leaving hundreds of privately-owned cattle behind.

Making matters worse, the plan also includes sex-ratio skewing of the herds to favor stallions over mares, a strategy that is being implemented in the absence of any scientific justification or review.

Breaking News Update: Convicted Nebraska Wild Mustang Murderer Up for Parole

HOUSTON (SFTHH) – Sources close to SFTHH have verified that Jason Meduna, convicted of 145 counts of felony animal cruelty carrying a sentence of 5-10 years, is up for parole on October 26th, 2011 after barely serving 20 months of his sentence.  Meduna shocked a Nebraska court and the nation in April of ’09 when dozens of wild horses were found dead from starvation on his Nebraska 3- Strikes Ranch with hundreds more sick and dying.

Ban private “ownership” of exotic pets: 49 slaughtered after set free

From CNN | By Will Tavers

CNN Editor’s note: Will Tavers is CEO and co-founder of the Born Free Foundation, whose mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue animals in need and protect wildlife, including highly endangered species. The foundation includes Born Free USA, which runs a primate sanctuary in Texas for 500 primates rescued from laboratories, roadside zoos and private possession.

Exotic animals should live in the wild, not be exploited in profit-motivated zoos — or worse — as “pets” or backyard oddities by people who have a deeply misguided sense of dominion or ownership.

Man caught on film beating dog- neighbours take matters into their own hands!‏

MAIL ONLINE

By Nick Enoch

A man has been arrested over allegations of animal abuse after he was caught on film appearing to beat a terrified dog with a pole as it desperately tried to get inside its owner’s house.

The video, shot from a neighbouring window, shows what seems to be a white Staffordshire bull terrier being kicked, punched in the face and repeatedly hit while a small boy looks on excitedly.

Within hours of the footage being posted on social networking site Facebook, an angry mob is said to have surrounded the man’s house in Grimsby, north-east Lincolnshire.

Police were called to the address last night and onlookers watched as a man, believed to be the dog’s owner, was arrested.

 Man saves dogs‏

Fantastic interception by a very brave man, and the help of many animal rights activists!

By Bo Gu, NBC News

BEIJING – Traffic was running smoothly on a highway just outside Beijing last Friday – until a man noticed an enormous truck carrying stacks of caged dogs.

Mr. An, an animal rights activist and volunteer at Beijing-based China Small Animal Protection Association, saw the cramped, whimpering dogs and decided to do something. His decision ended up saving the lives of 580 canines, who were on their way to the northeastern city of Changchun, where they were to be slaughtered and eventually served for dinner.

Dear ________,

Re:   Bill C-322 An Act to amend the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act (slaughter of horses for human consumption)

I am writing to ask you as a Member of Parliament/Canadian Legislative Assembly  to support the newly introduced Biill C-322. On October 5, 2011, Alex Atamanenko tabled Private Members Bill C-322, proposing to shut down the slaughtering of horses for human consumption in Canada, and I am asking for your help.

http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-1/C-322/

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada statistics, 88,915 horses died in Canadian slaughterhouses in 2010. This translates to over 1,700 horses every week that meet their awful fate in Canadian slaughterhouses. There are currently 4 federally licensed horse slaughter plants in Canada (2 in AB, and 2 in QC). About half of the horses are exported from the U.S., where slaughter plants have closed, but exports still continue. Horse slaughter has been in Canada for years, but U.S. imports have increased as a result of the 2007 closure of the last U.S. plant. U.S. citizens fought hard to close the industry. However, until laws are passed, horses will continue to be exported to Canada and Mexico. A market for horse meat for human consumption exists in Europe and Asia. However, the majority of people do not support it and an Ipsos-Reid poll reveals that nearly 2/3 of Canadians do not believe in killing horses for human consumption.

Drugs, which are prohibited for use during the life of any animals destined for the human food supply, are routinely being administered to horses. Mr. Atamanenko states, “It is irresponsible for Canada to allow the sale of meat from horses as a food item when they have never been raised in accordance with the food safety practices required for all other animals”.

• Horses have not traditionally been raised for human consumption in Canada. Horse meat products are likely to contain prohibited substances. Horses are considered sport and companion animals, not livestock. Many Canadians believe that this industry must be abolished on humane grounds. 64% of Canadians do not support it.

• The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition has compelling evidence of horse cruelty and suffering as a result of rough handling and poor slaughter practices at 3 Canadian horse slaughter plants. See “Black Beauty Betrayed” (2008) and “Chambers of Carnage” (2010) on the CHDC website.

• Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and Member of the Leadership Council of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, said of our June 2008 report on Natural Valley Farms plant in SK: “horses experienced sheer terror”, “some horses were not properly stunned”, and “this practice should be banned”.

• Dr. Debi Zimmermann B.Sc. (Zoology), D.V.M. (AB) stated upon viewing footage from Bouvry Exports (AB) and Viande Richelieu (QC) in April 2010: “I conclude that the wary and flighty nature of the horse, coupled with the poorly designed kill plant systems currently in place at Bouvry Exports and Viande Richelieu, results in unacceptable levels of suffering endured by horses (both in number of horses and degree of suffering), and poses inherent dangers to
plant personnel.”

• The Federal Health of Animals Act is not enforced, which would protect sick, pregnant and unfit horses, and prohibit overcrowding; as well the Recommended Code of Practice for Care and Handling of Farm Animals: Transportation of Horses is not enforced.

• The CFIA does not enforce their own weak rules that slaughter bound horses must not be transported for longer than 36 hours straight and must be provided with feed, water and rest at required intervals. Double decker trailers are still allowed. Horses are shipped in crowded trailers over long distances, and often arrive injured, sometimes fatally.

• The horse slaughter process itself is not humane euthanasia. It is a predatory business that sustains a culture of cruelty to horses.

Please do the right thing for the horses in Canada by supporting anti-slaughter legislation in Parliament.

YOU ARE VOICE FOR THE HORSES, PLEASE SPEAK OUT FOR THEM!

Sincerely,Your name

LOKI UPDATE

LOKI

LOKI UPDATE

The 48 hour disappearance of LOKI had me thinking the worst…how could I not,  given the history of the brutality shown to dogs in the NWT, in particular loose, feral and stray dogs.

Thankfully since I found him Friday the 14th, LOKI has been coming to my home 4 to 5 times each day.  Right now as I type this post, he is sleeping in my backyard, the sun glinting off that beautiful black coat of his.

I spent from 4:30 to 5:30 today in his domain across the ravine with him, not at all interested in eating, he just wanted company and proceeded to lay his head on those large paws of his, and drift off to sleep.  I slipped away quietly and returned home.  Within minutes he arrived once again to my yard.

It is now 6 and he has spent the last half hour relaxed and content in my yard.  He did go to the blanket I left for him, just as I had done Sunday, and he started to drag it off, tipping his plate of food along with it.  I left the blanket in place and added a sweat shirt  I’d worn all weekend and a toy…I am anxious to see if he takes off with the sweatshirt.  I just videoed the Magpies eating LOKI’s dinner, and believe it or not Mr. Raven took off with LOKI’s soup-bone…how could he even fly with that???

Best place to be, my own backyard, watching wildlife do what they do, not behind cages in zoos where they are so bored and frustrated all the time.  Wildlife lives best in the wild!!!

Content  & Safe (These pictures were taken Sunday) and I have new videos and pics of LOKI tonight)

I recorded LOKI with the toy, and got some pics of him stretched out with his head on the new toy, as well

as recording the Magpies and Mr. Raven at his dinner plate, but you’ll have to come back to see all that.

In the mean time I hope everyone enjoys these pictures and the two new videos I took yesterday.

Loki & Henry

“Saving America’s Horses” to launch in Canada!

For Immediate Release
Wild for Life Foundation

(Los Angeles, CA, August 26, 2011) “Saving America’s Horses” to launch in Canada!

Wild for Life Foundation is proud to announce the launching of the acclaimed film, “Saving America’s Horses – A Nation Betrayed” in Canada. Founder of CHDC and Advisory Board Member to “Saving America’s Horses”, Sinikka Crosland underscores the importance of bringing this film from the U.S. to Canada because the problems exist on both sides of the federal border.

Launching the film in Canada costs money and donations are needed to help cover expenses like festival and screening fees, replication, travel, and lodging. Filmmaker Katia Louise has been invited to present the film in person at the upcoming International Film North Festival which runs Sept 22nd – 24th, in Huntsville, Canada. The festival will feature a special advance screening on Saturday, Sept 24th at 2PM with a filmmaker Q & A to follow. Representatives from the CHDC including Twyla Francois and Shelley Grainger will also take part in the lively discussion.

“Saving America’s Horses – A Nation Betrayed” features lead investigator Twyla Francois and exclusive undercover footage from the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition (CHDC). This important documentary resource provides a platform to over 40 of the world’s most renowned equine professionals bringing their voices to the world stage through cinema on behalf of ending equine cruelty.

Bringing this film to Canada is part of the “Saving America’s Horses” On World Stage campaign just recently launched by Wild for Life Foundation. The chief objective is to get the truth out through the public release and distribution of this lifesaving film.

Another positively amazing day with LOKI since he returned.  The first video was taken yesterday afternoon when LOKI decided to introduce me to his beautiful new friend.  As it turned out both Henri and Charlie showed up as well, so all of LOKI’s friends were getting introduced to this beauty.

Not to be undone by any stretch of the imagination, Mr. Raven, who had helped me with my yard work, joined in the mix as you will see.

The second video is one taken Sunday morning, this morning, LOKI with yet another friend he brought over.  I never know what to expect…earlier I had gone out to LOKI around 8 a.m. to give him breakfast.

He returned around 10 a.m. just wanting company, so we stretched out together on the ground.  I had broken the ice that formed on the top of his water and was surprised when he laid down and started to lick it rather than to drink.  We spent roughly an hour together like that when he heard what I believed was Henri..he then trotted off to meet his friend.

Only moments ago, LOKI paid me yet another visit and I again was able to spend some quality time with him. That particular video will be coming shortly, I did get great pics of him though.

He ate well, and then with his soup-bone, stretched out for a nap.

Henri was with him and Henri lounged beneath one of the smaller trees.

Unfortunately the sound of a car spooked LOKI, and he crossed the ravine and of course so did I.

So everyone, please meet two of LOKI’s newest friends.  Enjoy.
