The ongoing battle to end the brutal Bureau of Land Management roundups of Wild Horses (for slaughter) across America continues. The brutal slaughter of Burros in America continues. Why..so that the private interests of cattle ranchers are catered to by providing to these special interest group the lands which support grazing.
Lands which the wild herds of horses and burros need for their very survival!!
When will the voices of all who fight for the inherent rights of these animals be heard????
When will the rights as guaranteed by the unanimously passed Public Law 92-195 be actually honored by the U.S. Government?

The Interior Department Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing a triple assault on the 1,800-square-mile Pancake Complex located in south-central Nevada, approximately 30 miles west of Ely. The proposed roundup includes the:
► Massive removal of 800 to 1,000 wild horses from within and outside the Complex scheduled for winter 2012;
► Permanent removal of all wild horses from Jakes Wash Wild Horse Herd Area; and
► Replacement of 200 wild stallions with geldings over the next six to ten years.
The plan also involves skewing of sex ratios and the stampeding of horses in late winter, when mares will be heavily pregnant, subjecting them to trauma that has been proven to cause spontaneous abortions.
The Complex includes the Pancake and Sand Springs West Herd Management Areas (HMAs), and the Jakes Wash Herd Area (HA). The proposed roundup also includes removal of wild horses from the U.S. Forest Service’s (USFS) Monte Cristo Wild Horse Territory (WHT).
The proposed “zeroing-out” of, or removal of all horses from, the Jakes Wash HA continues the BLM’s systematic reduction of wild horse habitat over the past 40 years, during which nearly 20 million acres have been lost to wild horses and burros. Once an area is “zeroed out,” no wild horses or burros will be allowed back on it.
Despite its mandate to protect wild horses, the BLM allocates 80 percent (80%) of the resources in these areas to livestock, not wild horses, despite the Congressional designation of these lands as wild horse habitat.
Help us continue to build a strong public record of opposition to the BLM’s continued giveaway of our public lands to the livestock industry to the detriment of the environment, our wild horses and other wildlife species!

We as Canadians must apply pressure to the Federal Government of Canada urging that this Bill C-322 passes, that it does not become buried in the bureaucrat pile of debris that so many other bills on Animal Protection Legislation have landed upon in this country.

Dear Ms. Carleton,
Thank you for taking the time to write to me about the Private Members Bill C-322. Our government is yet to address Mr. Atamanenko’s bill in this session but it is the same one he introduced during Parliament’s last session.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provides clear direction to industry regarding requirements on what veterinary drugs cannot be used on horses for slaughter and the length of time necessary for veterinary drugs that are allowed to be used on horses for slaughter to clear their system to a level that makes it safe for human consumption.
The CFIA has a surveillance testing program for chemical residues in meat in place that includes testing horse meat for Phenylbutazone. In the last 5 years all tests for Phenylbutazone came back negative, indicating no presence of the pharmaceutical.
As an additional safeguard, as of July 31, 2010, it as been be mandatory that every horse presented for slaughter in federally-inspected equine facilities, have records on all the vaccines and medications given in the previous six months.
With regards to the welfare of the horses during transportation, ensuring that animals are properly cared for is a shared responibility between producers and federal, provincial and territorial governments. Producers are accountable to ensure the well-being and proper treatment of their animals while federal, provincial and territorial governments share the legislative and enforcement responsibility for animal welfare. It is important to note that these three groups continuously work together to ensure that appropriate legislative measures are in place to support proper animal treatment and care.
Canada’s approach to addressing animal care and welfare issues also includes working closely with a network of industry stakeholders and responisble organizations. For example, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario all have active farm animal councils that provide excellent educational material and training information for producersand other stakeholders on issues pertaining to animal welfare. The federal government is also investing up to $3.4 million to further support the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC)in updating and developing on-farm assessment protocols and the Recommended Codes of Proctice for the care and handling of farm animals.
Thank you for sharing your concerns and comments. Please be assured of the Government of Canada’s interest in ensuring high animal welfare standards in Canada.
Yours very truly,
Chris Alexander, MP

To: sboyles@hsus.org,
I am sure many can only hope that the HSUS’s efforts on Education (see below in the collaboration retailer/producer/animal welfare) would expand to covering the bases to educate America on the wild horses and burros – how they are dwindling away before our very eyes, whilst most Americans are completely in the dark. Main stream media and the press have failed to cover this topic as it represent the reality, except for a few who had the courage to do just that. Thank you George and Jane.
Surely an organization of the caliber of HSUS and their alliance with BLM and PZP’ing our herds into extinction could do more to reach their members with an education campaign. Most Americans have no idea what is really happening to our wild horses, the imminent and repetitious brutal cruelty during round ups and the BLM’s tale is a saga that justifies the very need to tell the truth as it is: America’s wild horses suffer at the hands of our government and their future is truly at stake in the name of special interests, interwoven corruption within government agencies and a most non-transparent attempt to pacify the knowing public in the ever-rising public pressure.
Just as the meat production and its reality is a topic for personal distinction and/or preferences – and obviously the HSUS and core figures are deeply involved – the topic of our wild horses and burros deserves national attention.
Not only because of the inhumane and inefficient past that doomed over them by BLM and Salazar – but because they are our national icon, on whose back this country was built and every American deserves to know the truth, now.
Our mustangs are pushed into extinction. HSUS may want to educate on that for a change – besides the efforts to influence a rigid agency, time is of the essence that your every member finds out more on the wild mustangs, and their irreparably doomed existence, threatened by greed and oblivion, and the slow wheels of bureaucratic, organized incompetence.

I’ve been here [with HSUS] since April of this year… My duties are to escalate the work that the Humane Society of the United States has been doing in regard to supporting farmers who are good stewards of the land and the animals. The Humane Society has been working very hard at educating retailers and then working with producers, but now they’d like to connect the two. There’s market opportunity for these producers and how can the Humane Society of the United States step in, help facilitate that opening those markets and connecting those producers to a premium market.
