We have all had the experience of the horrid emptiness in the loss of a Beloved Animal Companion.  It matters nothing whether that companion is a cat, dog, ferret, rabbit, mouse, hamster, or even fish.  There is a gaping hole left behind, that can only be filled with the Loving Memories of a life lived well, shared with complete devotion and unconditional love.

We can relish in the yesterdays, the many pictures, the fond memories of the antics, the unique personalities, the growing and developing years from infant to mature and loyal companion.  They have silently and willingly shared our sorrows, bringing us great comfort by their presence;  they have allowed us to rant and rave, to also sit in quiet contemplation,; they have been patient and tolerant of our moods or our delays to take them for the needed quality time together of a long walk.  They have sat in silence ever watchful over us, sensitive to every emotion even though we may have successfully hidden it from our human companions.  Each furry companion has taught us to sit in silence, to observe the world as they do, they have taught us to be kind, to be compassionate and gentle and they have taught us what it means to truly love unconditionally.

My mother and I, and I know many of you do as well, believe animals have souls, some also believe as we do that they are angels sent to comfort and protect us.

With all of this now said, it is with honest heartfelt sorrow that I must let all of you know that we have lost a loved one, the dearest and closest Friend of Loki.

HELD FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

April 8 2014 023

So many of you have followed Loki’ story for a lot of years now.  From the early says in 2010 when I first began in the wilds with this boy, to present day, with him now part of my family.

From his days as a youngster, living feral in the Boreal Forest of the Northwest Territories Canada , when I would take food and fresh water to him each and every day and night, often 4 times a day our journey continued and our trust in each other grew.

Watching this beautiful boy’s personality develop, his gentle and timid nature grow through out those years, was a precious gift that can never be taken from me.  The time we shared, hidden from view, from prying eyes was very special to both of us.  Silent conversations that taught me personally so much about what it is to love, to share my life with such an amazing and beautiful spirit allowed me to return back ‘home’ as I call it.  That inner place that the years had buried so deep inside that I had believed it lost to me forever.

The struggles, the fight, the worry, emotional pain and days of terror and fear for his safety are now over, now it is time to relish in the life we two now share as one.

No longer is “Our Boy” as all Loki’s close to 11,00 followers call him, going to face life alone.  No longer will he find himself wondering about  his next meal, dealing with mud to lay upon, snow and ice to cover him….now he is in his forever home.

Dear Friend of Wildlife

Thanks to all of you who have written letters and signed petitions opposing the Spring Bear Hunt in Ontario. Although the Liberal government seems determined to go ahead, our collective efforts are getting a lot of attention and have encouraged us to continue this fight.

Animal Alliance of Canada, along with Zoocheck Canada, are taking the Province to court over the partial reintroduction of the spring bear hunt.

On Monday the Minister of Natural Resources and Attorney General of Ontario were served with a Notice of Application for Judicial Review and the Attorney General of Canada was served with a Notice of Constitutional Question on behalf of the two organizations. David Estrin, a certified environmental law specialist with Gowlings LLP in Toronto, Michael Watson, a Gowlings civil litigation partner and Brent Arnold, another Gowlings litigator, are our lawyers. Three Justices of the Ontario Divisional Court are scheduled to hear the application April 29, 2014 in Toronto.

Mr. Estrin summarized the legal position to be advanced:

“The Applicants contend that the Minister failed to comply with the MNR’s own Statement of Environmental Values and therefore failed to comply with section 11 of the Environmental Bill of Rights, that the Proposal violates the Criminal Code of Canada prohibition on causing cruelty to animals and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional, and the Minister did not apply for or receive approval for this Proposal under the Environmental Assessment Act.”

You can read more information on the Animal Alliance website, including their legal filings: http://www.animalalliance.ca

Gowlings is very generously working pro bono, but Animal Alliance will have to cover other costs. So if you wish to help out by donating to its legal action, please feel free to do so at the address below.

We’ve heard from some very passionate people over these past few weeks. We feel so fortunate to have such an outpouring of support – for the bears.

The Issue:

Until 1999, thousands of black bears were killed when they came out of hibernation in the spring, baited with garbage food and hunted down by dogs.

Now black bears will be killed as they come out of hibernation – when they are most vulnerable – when females have nursing cubs.

You can still vote No in opposition to the Spring Bear Hunt by going to this link:
It’s important to Vote as our side has moved slightly ahead at this point.  Many thanks for the determined Bear advocates out there who found this avenue to Vote after the link on the news page had changed.

Thank you Donna for all that you do.
SUMMER IS COMING:  Thank you Sarah West for this:

HEAT: HEATSTROKE

Dogs eliminate heat through panting; however if the temperature of the environment is too hot and humid then panting becomes ineffective.

Normal body temperature is around 38.5C/101.4F. In cases of heat-stroke a dog’s body temperature can rise in excess of 41.6C/107F. Increased muscular effort displayed during excessive panting can also cause a rise in body temperature.

Signs of heat-stroke:

·         Panting excessively

·         Anxious behaviour

·         Very red gums turning blue in extreme circumstances

·         Salivating

·         Very rapid heart rate

·         In cases of severe heat-stroke – collapse, convulsions, shock

What to do if your dog is suffering with heat-stroke:

·         Seek veterinary attention immediately as it can be difficult to be sure how serious the situation is and urgent treatment may be needed.

·         Remove the dog from the hot environment

·         Reduce body temperature immediately

·         Immerse the dog in tepid water, cooling gradually, using either a shower spray or similar.  Then douse the dog in cool water, particularly the head and neck – avoid using ice-cold water; or cover your dog with wet sheets.  Use a fan to increase air flow over the dog as this aids cooling.

·         Allow the dog to drink as much water as he wants in small quantities at a time (if possible add a pinch of salt to the water)

·         Continue to douse the dog in cold water until his breathing starts to settle

·         Seek veterinary attention as soon as is safe to do so

Please note

·         If using a fan to cool your dog be careful of electric wires.

·         Do not  EVER throw cold water over your / any dog!

If a dog’s temperature is not reduced immediately, heat-stroke can be fatal

If you come across a dog in a hot car PLEASE REPORT ASAP ! Find a spray bottle and try to spray dog and also change spray nozzle to you shoot water into dog’s mouth a little at a time Hopefully a car window will have been left open

Tick Repellents
Information excerpted from an article by CJPuotinen

Far be it from us to tell you to put pesticides on your dog. But we’ve never heard of a single nontoxic preparation that was effective at keeping ticks off all dogs.  For some dogs, only the potent pesticides seem to keep ticks away. There are, however, some nontoxic products – both commercially produced and homemade formulas – that work to repel ticks well enough to consider using them as part of a comprehensive Lyme disease prevention program.

In 1994, botanist Arthur O. Tucker reviewed the scientific literature on herbs that repel mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks, and similar pests. He found that opopanax myrrh (Commiphora erythaea), the myrrh of ancient Egypt, has been shown to repel adults of the African brown ear, deer, black-footed, lone star, and American dog tick. Because opopanax myrrh is not widely sold, Tucker speculated that the more readily available common myrrh (C. myrrha) might have similar properties, but herbalists who experiment with live ticks report that of the herbs said to repel them, including myrrh, rosemary, and California laurel, only rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), palmarosa (Cymbagopogon martini motia), which has a similar fragrance, and opopanax myrrh truly repel deer and dog ticks.

CJ Puotinen, author of The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care and Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats, describes an all-purpose repellent that will make pets (and people!) less attractive to ticks and other biting insects. She suggests blending 20 drops of rose geranium, palmarosa, or opopanax myrrh essential oil (or any combination) with three drops citronella essential oil (which repels mosquitoes) and enough vodka, neem tincture, or bay rum aftershave to dissolve the essential oils. Start with two tablespoons alcohol or tincture and add more as needed to make the oils dissolve completely. Do not use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. When there is no longer a thin film of oil on the surface, add one cup water, herbal tea, or aloe vera juice or gel. Apply frequently, avoiding the eyes.

During the years that I spent with LOKI, on his terms, in his domain, you can only imagine the fear and anxiety I felt each day that I would venture out looking for him.  The question always in the back of my mind (would this be the day that I could not find him, or that he would not come to me when I used our signal)?  There were those days that my heart was in my throat, because I could not find him, because he did not come.  The search would then be on and I would keep going out at all hours of that day to find him.  There were times that he would totally disappear for days, and at those times my fears flourished in nightmarish visions of him suffering, laying perhaps in a leg trap, perhaps dying a slow death from poison or from a fatal gunshot.

The mind has a wonderful way of conjuring such images, removing sleep from ones agenda and instilling sheer panic…motivating one to go to extremes in their search attempts.

Three years, each and every day, no matter what time of day, no matter what weather conditions, that is the life I lead. Nov 18 2011 035 Now that life has taken a term for the better and LOKI is home, safe, loved and protected with my family.  Gone for me now, is the daily anxiety and fear as well as the horrible anger I carried for so long.  Replaced with a calm and renewed commitment to ensure that LOKI remains healthy, happy and strong in his new life.

Despite him now living with my family, his new pack, diligence is on the agenda each and every day to ensure his safety.  Multiple leashes are used when we go for our daily walks, a necessity to ensure that he remains connected to my person.  No risks can ever be taken for him to break away as catching him again would be a monumental task if not impossible…and it could mean his death.

Some individuals have questioned as to why he has not been placed within a sanctuary…..to those who have asked…research was done by myself and my closest followers on just that.  Did you know that there are approximately 250,000 +  WD in sanctuaries across North America.  That most of these sanctuaries are full.  It is a sad commentary that they are, that they continue to have to rescue and save these beautiful creatures.

LOKI and I, through our three years of contact, on his terms, in his domain shared something very special…Patience….with each other.  Through this Patience was born Trust, Respect and Understanding.  Never, ever did I force him to do anything, all was by his own Choice and his Choice alone.  From the very first time that he allowed me to approach him when he was a youngster, to his eventual responding to our secret signal, to his showing me the whereabouts of his secret hiding places, secret stashes of the many toys and blankets I would bring to him, even to taking me to and allowing me to enter into his winter dens…..all has been by his Choice.

It takes a great deal of time to win the Trust, Respect and Understanding of an animal, more so from one that had never known the kindness of a gentle touch.  It takes a great deal of Patience and an unwavering Commitment from both parties to develop that form of relationship.  LOKI took the time, offered his Patience and his Acceptance to me.  The Bond that developed over those three years grew stronger each and every day, and it is that Bond born of Love that has allowed him to Transition as gracefully as he has to his new life.

From the moment that LOKI decided to and took that first step into my home, his life changed as did my own and that of my family.  Admittedly it was difficult for him at first, new sights, new smells, new dogs and cats to get acquainted with and of course another human, my mother.  His nervousness was evident and understandable, his Patience was again required.  He did not fail in this.  He tolerated ear scratches, nose rubs and gentle touching….now he looks for it and quite enjoys the attention….often coming silently up behind us and poking us with his nose to say ‘I am here’.  He sleeps in front of the fire, on soft pet beds, after long evening walks on cold nights, he lounges where it is warm and safe and sleeps beside my Hemi on beds in my own bedroom.  He no longer wonders where and when his next warm meal will come from, nor where he can find shelter from winter storms, freezing rain and powerful winds.  I will never again find him huddled in a tiny ball, soaked to the skin and looking terribly cold and forlorn, pitiful in fact.December 25 2012 031

A Promise which I made to him over three years ago has been kept, and now through the Patience, Trust, Respect, Understanding, Bond and the Love we share, LOKI will live out his days without fear, without harassment, without the dangers that faced him each and every day of his life in his first years.

He is one of the lucky ones, and it breaks my hear to know that there remain so many others out there that are not so lucky…so despite the diminished anger, I still do get angry when I become aware of those that could not be helped in time.

We must all do our part to end the relentless suffering, both at home and around the world.

Animals dont make me cry

These following pictures are the before and after in the life of LOKI and speak of our three year journey together from the beginning.
